As exam season looms and all the freshers return to halls, finding a place to revise can be tricky. The only way to guarantee a good seat is turning up at the crack of dawn. Let’s be honest, a sleep deprived you won’t be getting any good work done. What are the alternatives to the library for revising on campus?
1. From the comfort of your bedroom
We’ve all tried (and probably failed) revising at home. It’s just too distracting!? If you work in your room the temptation of sitting on your bed often ends in one too many ‘power naps’. Working in the kitchen leaves you subject to the footfall of your other housemates, and their friends, and their s/o’s. All that doesn’t add up to a very productive working environment. However, there are a few perks working at home provides. Number one is access to food! Revision snacks are readily available saving you money and time. There’s also the huge benefit that you can revise in your pyjamas – the dream right? So if you can find a distraction-free space at home utilise it!
2. Bookable rooms
For the more organised student a bookable study room could be just the ticket! The perks are numerous. Being designated a specific time slot allows you to structure your revision. I find it’s easier to balance work and taking breaks when there’s a timetable to follow. The added privacy cuts out most distractions, unless you book as a group. There’s also something quite motivating about having a room to yourself. The feeling of being in a professional environment could bring out some of your best work.
3. Comfy study spaces
Campus is often scattered by student zones with comfy seating and tables. Outside of exam season these are used more socially but as the libraries fill to bursting they can ease over-spill. This might not be the most study-able environment unless you have some more casual work to be doing but helpful nonetheless. At UoN its clear more and more of this seating has been introduced around the Portland area so make use of it!
4. Coffee shops
A personal favourite. Again for the fans of people watching and working in a light atmosphere. Coffee shops provide a great place to get some work done. First of all there’s lots of coffee to keep you awake and focused. Often there is good seating and tables – perfect to set up your laptop. It also doesn’t matter where you are there will always be a coffee shop nearby – which means no excuses for not getting work done. Whether you find yourself in a campus coffee shop or one in town the outcome is the same.
It pays to be a little more creative when it comes to finding a good place to work. Who knows you might find your perfect spot somewhere in this list…or off it!
