Top Tips for your Final Year

Final year is tough. The workload increases, it’s harder, and it’s worth two thirds of your degree – scary stuff. Breakdowns are inevitable and you will question your life choices daily, but here are a few ways to make it a little bit easier.

1. Stay on top of things

It’s easier said than done, but if you stay on top of notes and readings throughout the term you’ll thank yourself when it comes to exams. A great way to do it is make a master Word Document for each module, with all of your lecture and reading notes on it that you add to every week. Obviously, everyone has their own way of doing things but I know this really helps me. This way you can just print it out before exams and you’ve already got your revision guide! Plus, you can identify what you don’t understand and seek help before the holidays.

2. Choose your modules wisely (if you can)

I can’t speak for all degrees, but in Management we get quite a lot of freedom in final year, meaning we can pick a balance of exam and coursework modules. Generally speaking, you are either better at coursework or exams, so try to create a timetable that works for you. If you’re not sure which you are better at, wait until after your Christmas exams. If there is a striking difference between your exam grades and coursework grades then chances are it will happen again. This said, it’s important that you choose modules you will enjoy as well. What I mean by this is, if you’re better at coursework but a module you are really interested in is assessed by an exam, pick the one you know you will enjoy. It’s final year, you need as many marks as possible.

3. Make use of lecturers

Before final year I don’t think I ever went to see a lecturer and probably emailed two. This year my sent mail is full of questions for them, and I’ve been to see a fair few in their office hours to clear up queries. We all ignore it, but lecturers have office hours for a reason! If you’re struggling with content or you’re not sure how to structure your essay, go and see them – they’re the one assessing you after all. I promise you, they aren’t scary at all and they will be more than happy to help.

4. Enjoy your time (there’s not much left!)

As easy as it is to spend all of your time stressing about your work, it’s your final year! Everything is happening for the last time (even those library breakdowns will come to an end), and it can be easy to forget about that. Savour time spent with friends, at societies or even just walking around campus – make the most of everything!
