The key to surviving results period

So, Uni is done. Exams are over. Summer has started. However, you’re still waiting on results. You might be waiting for your degree results or your results for second or first year. Whatever the context, this time can be nerve-wracking for all. I’m going to give you my best advice for surviving results period.

Firstly, relax.

That’s right, the key to surviving results period is to not think about results. Enjoy yourself and take your mind off it. There is nothing worse than the non stop thinking about results, how did I do? what did I get? It will mentally exhaust you in the long run, and, trust me, you don’t want that. Perhaps meet up with your friends, enjoy a night out or coffee date – whatever floats your boat. Just promise me, don’t think about it.

Get some perspective.

A little bit different to my first piece of advice but try and think of the worst case scenario and what that actually means. For instance, if you get a 2:2 when you hoped for a 2:1, what is the worst that can happen? Will the world fall in? Absolutely not, I promise you. This should hopefully allow you to get perspective and a reality check. Things won’t be that bad if the worst happens, you just have to believe it.

Ask ALL of the questions.

So, the day has come, results period is over, you’re getting your marks. You go online or into uni and find out what you got. Congratulations if you’re pleased with your results!

But what do you do if you aren’t happy? It’s now time for questions and ask ALL of them. Find the person who marked your paper and asked why you go the mark you did and ask them to go into as much detail as possible. Also, book an appointment with your personal tutor to discuss the reality of your results: what could I do next time? does this impact my whole education career?

This helps you in two ways. Firstly, it will help you to get some perspective and it will help you in the long run. By the time you get to the next results period, you will have learnt where your mistakes are and worked out how to tackle them. You got this. Just believe in yourself.
