Although the UK has plenty to offer there’s nothing quite like walking off a plane and having the holiday heat hit you. Filling your summer travelling sounds like a great idea – until you check your finances…here’s a few things to consider to keep costs low!
Scour websites
The trick to finding cheap flights is not to care all that much about where you’re going. If you’re hell set on going to a specific destination at a specific time, inevitably, prices will be high. So instead be flexible and open to something a little more off-piste. A great way to find deals online is to scour travel websites like skyscanner. Setting your destination preferences to anywhere will show you all the cheapest places to go in a given month. This way of booking holidays is also great for last minute getaways.
Alternative accommodation
Flights first, accommodation after – the golden rule to follow when organising a holiday! Most cheap flight deals are time sensitive. Neglect booking right away for the sake of ensuring a place to stay and you stand the risk of prices creeping up. Use comparison sites to find the best hotel rooms – or scrap hotels all together. Hostels are a great, budget friendly alternative and really don’t deserve the bad rep of being grimy. If there’s a few of you going away airb&b makes for fantastic split-the-cost accommodation. Often you’ll find villas and apartments to suit any number of guests and come with cooking facilities so you’ll save on eating out.
Currency
Another essential part of holiday prep – currency! It can be a little confusing and intimidating looking at all the different exchange rates but there some tips and tricks. The first, and by far the cheapest, is to buy leftover euros from your friends and family. This way you’ll avoid commercial exchange rates. Chances are you’re doing your friends and family a favour too, many travel agents won’t exchange coins and small change so take the shrapnel off their hands! Failing friends and family but still avoiding pesky travel agent prices you could exchange your currency in pawn shops. Whatever you do, do not buy currency when you get there. Airports and exchange shops in tourist areas have way inflated rates – if you do need more money when you’re on holiday think about cards like Monzo that can be used abroad.
