Everything you should do in your first week at Uni

For the next couple of weeks students from all over the country are going to University for the first time – or they’re returning for another year. So one of the questions that you might have is ‘What should I do in my first week at Uni?’ Although there are no set rules and you are free to make up your own mind on what to do, here are a few suggestions that you might not have thought of.

Go to your society sign-up event.

Now, this is one of the obvious things to do when you are in your first week at University, but nevertheless it’s still worth reminding you about it. This is an opportunity to see what your University offers and what you could get involved in. It’s a chance to do something that you have never done before or to improve on one of your passions. It’s a chance to meet people who share the same interests as you and make new friends. Sign up to as many as you can and see what you like. You can always decide later on that it’s not for you or you will find that it’s the very thing you’ve been looking for.

Walk around campus

The first week is a chance to become familiar with your campus. It gives you an opportunity to explore your campus to see what it has to offer if you are not fully aware of that already. Walk around with your flatmates, friends or even by yourself so you can work out where to go for your lectures, seminars and society meetings. So come the following week, when your lectures start, you will feel more at ease on where to go.

Go into town

Some Universities are campus-based and are quite far away from the town or city centre, other Universities are already based in the city. Whichever one you attend, try to explore your general area in your first week at Uni so you’re not stuck on campus. Make the most of your time and see what else you can discover.

Go to your Student Union

This is the first place to go to if you have any concerns about University life, they are there to help you. If you have concerns about travel, food or general well being they can give you advice and guidance on some of the queries that you might have, such as what the cheapest travel options are or where the best local restaurants are.
