So you’re moving to Nottingham? It’s a strange time for everyone but the best way to put your parents at ease is to show what Nottingham University has to offer! Whether they’re visiting for the first time or just being reminded, here are the best ways to show off what I believe to be one of the best cities to study in.

Walking tour of campus
The best place to start has to be campus, right? It’s where you’ll spend most of your time studying and living. A walking tour will help you get your own bearings as well as settle your parents. Begin with accommodation, it’s pretty quickly going to become ‘home’ so you’ll need it as a navigation point. While you’re there you might want to show off some of the premium accommodation – we all know Cripps and HuStu are the epitome of student living. It’s sure to impress your parents even if you weren’t lucky enough to be housed there. Next branch out to the lecture buildings, sports facilities and SU – more places you’ll be hanging out. Something a little off-piste to visit is the collection of sustainable eco homes. Another opportunity to be nosy but also not something you can find on every uni campus.

Grab a coffee
After a walking tour you’ll be wanting some refreshment – what better than coffee? Campus has a few places – even its own Starbucks. If you want somewhere within the hub of Nottingham university head to Portland coffee overlooking the lake and famous Trent building. You could also head to lakeside arts, not strictly a university building but on campus nonetheless. There’s a small museum to peruse while you’re there and the coffee prices tend to be a little cheaper!

Explore the city
Nottingham is catered towards its huge student population but don’t worry it’s not all cheap meals and £6 ‘spoons pitchers. There’s plenty more refined places to take your parents – omitting the strip of kebab shops and clubs of course. Instead take a look around the old town where you’ll find cobbled streets lined with charity shops, Nottingham castle and ye olde Jerusalem, the oldest pub in England. You know your Dads going to be a fan of that one. It’s also good for shopping. New pastel highlighters, plants or wall hangings anyone? It really is time to get excited and proud of where you’ll be studying come September.

After all that you’re probably exhausted but you almost certainly won’t have scratched the surface of what Nottingham has to offer. All the more reason to visit again or encourage your parents to come throughout the year. Moving to university is the time for independence and beginning your own adult life but it wouldn’t be the same without involving your parents in that journey as well.
