Starting a Grad Job: Tips and Tricks

Recently, I started my grad job, and although I’ve really been enjoying it, there’s been a lot to learn! Entering the real world is definitely scary, so here are some of the things I’ve picked up over the last couple of weeks.

Do a test run of your journey to work

Whether you are working around the corner or you’re commuting to another city, it’s a good idea to do a test run before you start. That way, you can see if your planned route is the quickest/gets you there on time, and on your first day you’ll know where you are going. If you’re in London, City Mapper is great for doing this. It also helps minimise your risk of being late on the first day, which wouldn’t be the best first impression! A bonus tip is to take a book and your earphones if you’re getting the train, as those journeys can be very long.

Ask lots of questions

For most people, a grad job is their first taste of the real working world. Personally, I had a lot of questions about both the company and just working in general. At uni, you don’t necessarily learn about the professional etiquette or how to do basic ‘work-y’ things, like booking holiday! No one will think you are asking too many questions, and they will all be really happy to answer them. Remember that everyone was new once – and they’re just as excited for you to be there as you are.

Speak to as many people as possible

It will vary between jobs, but often you’ll have an induction/training period when you start. For me, I won’t be on a team for a few months yet, so I think it’s really important for me to get to know people as I go along. Whether it’s just saying hi to someone you pass in the office, chatting to someone in the gym changing rooms or speaking to them after they have presented to you, networking is really valuable. It will also help you feel as if you are more part of the office and the team which will help you settle in a lot quicker!
