Why you should join a society at University

Whether you’re a new student at University or if you’ve just started your final year, it is advised that you make the most out of your time. This doesn’t just mean to get the top grades (which of course anybody should always aim for), but to enjoy university life through socials and going out.

If you’re going into your first year, though an important year (a time to find out if your course is for you and a time to improve your essays and assignments, getting them up to scratch ready for your second year) it is still also okay to take it easy.

What societies should I join?

The first year usually does not count towards your final grade. So, make this year a time to explore and find out new, enjoyable hobbies, as well as studying.

Try and aim to join at least one sports society, to keep yourself active and fit, a chance to have some exercise. It’s a way to get a break from being stuck in your room, in your chair doing nothing but reading, writing and watching Netflix.

Also, try to join another social society as well. Something that sparks your interests. For example, a fan club society, or a crafts society, maybe a political and/ or religious society etc. It’s good to try a range of different societies, to get a taste of everything, enabling you to expand your horizon and experience.

Why should I join a society?

Joining different societies helps to build friendships, beyond your class and flatmates. It’s a place to find people with common interests and likes, which is very important. Allowing you to feel part of a group, instead of being isolated and alone. There are no limits to the number of societies you should join – take part in as many as you want. But remember to have fun and to make the most of your time at University.
