Three ways to make your CV stand out

Whether you’re applying to grad schemes or looking for a part time job at uni, your CV needs to be on point. I’m no expert, but here are three things that I think you should consider doing to make your CV stand out so that you bag the job.

stand out

1. Keep it short and simple

One or two pages is enough. Recruiters are skimming through hundreds of CVs and they don’t have time to read your 7 page essay. Sure, you’re proud of the work experience you did in year 10, but if it isn’t relevant anymore cut the section down – or leave it out completely! Similarly, one to two sentences about each of your experiences is a good amount of detail.

2. Double check it, then check it again

There’s nothing worse than being overlooked because you missed out a vital piece of information, or you spelt something wrong! Triple check it, make all your friends read it, have no shame! Sometimes it’s a good idea to get a fresh set of eyes on it because they might see things you’ve missed. Also, they might have some great ideas you can use to improve and stand out.

3. Make use of your uni resources

CV building is hard, especially if you’ve never done it before. Your uni will have so many helpful resources, including people who can look over and edit your CV. Make use of them while you can, as they are there to help you! They’ll give you tips on everything, from layout to content, and they know exactly what employers want to see.

Google and Word have CV templates, and you can find good examples of content online as well. CV writing can be boring, but there’s no reason why you can’t have a killer CV that you are super proud of.
