A problem faced by many mentoring schemes is a lack of activity throughout the academic year. How do you combat that?

Well, firstly, we allow students to communicate with each other in a way they already understand – through a phone screen.
Face-to-face mentoring is fantastically effective and we encourage all of our partners to still incorporate it, but students are much more comfortable talking in the digital nowadays, especially initially. (It’s just the way of the world).
Secondly, and this is the important bit, we reward our users (both mentors and mentees).
Mentors build up employability reviews – allowing them to demonstrate their characteristics to an employer through numbers. CVs all contain phrases about their communication skills, organisation, friendliness, helpfulness, topic knowledge, etc, etc. Now graduates can back that up.
